Oakley True Digital Edge
Oakley has introduced their new prescription sunglasses lens program for stronger prescriptions, True Digital Edge. The Edge program started in order to provide people with higher than average prescriptions the opportunity to wear the worlds best sports sunglasses. Expanding the Limits
Oakley True Digital Edge increases the prescription range, in most frames to +4.00 to -6.00, in a unique way that provides the best possible cosmetics, and an uninterrupted binocular field of view, while minimizing any peripheral distortion. This design allows for a lens that is up to 40% thinner than what previous technology allowed for prescriptions in this range while still providing at least a 120 degree field of vision.
Lens Thickness Reduction
| In a plus lens, the nasal edge thickness increases proportionally to the prescription. Dynamic Frost Technology
Distortion towards the peripheral portions of the lens (above) is common with stronger prescription in wrapped sports sunglasses. Oakley remedies this by not extending correction to these areas, then 'Frosting' them so you don't see the distortion. By limiting how far out the prescription goes, it allows them to keep the lens thickness to a minimum.
This example of 'Dynamic Frost' shows how Oakley prevents the wearer from trying to use distorted lens sections. This makes for a much safer and enjoyable experience. The amount of 'Frost' depends entirely on the frame choice, prescription, and PD measurement but will be at least 4mm and at most 11mm.
Oakley Edge - Available Lens Tints
The Oakley Edge prescription lens design is currently available in 5 different polarized tints. The polarized grey and bronze tints do not have an Iridium mirror coating which help hide the 'frosting' on the inside of the lens. If you are worried about that showing through, you should choose one of the Iridium options. If you are more concerned with the function, than any of the lens choices will work for you.
Current Edge Tints Include: Polarized Grey, Polarized Bronze, Polarized Black Iridium, Polarized Gold Iridium, and Polarized VR-28 Black Iridium.
